A Finish, Adam, Eve, the Serpent, and a Phobia

I have to start with a story about my childhood to explain my snake phobia. My father is the youngest of six children who all had children, in some cases several children, which makes me the third youngest of 19 grandchildren. My grandmother loved nothing more than have all her children and grandchildren visit her in her little pink house :-). Picture 13 adults, 19 kids with only about 8 years between the youngest and oldest, and you can start to envision the craziness of all of us in one tiny house together. Some of my fondest memories growing up center around my grandmother's home, picking and eating berries, cucumbers and tomatoes from the garden, playing hide and seek, flashlight tag and kick the can with my cousins. My boy cousins, and there were lots of them, 12 of the 19 kids, chased us with garter snakes. Which funnily enough didn't actually cause my snake phobia.

My grandmother had a chicken coop and I loved to go collect the eggs. The nests had these plastic coverings over them with a small hole that expanded to let the chicken in and out and I would just reach in and get the eggs. I went to collect the eggs one afternoon and reached in to grab eggs and found a large black snake instead. To say it scared me would be a huge understatement, I was petrified. I ran screaming to my grandmother who, being the country woman she was, grabbed the hoe and killed the snake. And the love hate relationship with snakes, i.e., serpents was born, LOL.

I am the girl sitting on the side of the swing set, the toddler is my sister, and three of my cousins are sitting on the swing.

All of this makes my fascination with Adam and Eve and the Serpent a bit difficult to understand. But there you go, I love to stitch the snake coiled around the tree. It's almost therapeutic :-). I finished Goode Huswife's Sarah Seifer today. I have loved this sampler for so long and I am so happy to have her stitched.

The handpainted pieces were done by Tanya

Thanks to the bad influence of my friend Tanya and my quest for all things A&E, I ordered this plate from Eldreth Pottery. Isn't it gorgeous? I told my DH it was my Mother's Day present, along with two plates from Ginger Cazan :-). He asked if he was generous, I told him I thought so, LOL. I think this plate will make a great companion for Sarah.

In keeping with my theme, one of my other very favorite pieces is Earth Sampler by The Primitive Needle. Jill Rensel framed it for me and even added an extra snake on the mat :-).

Finally, I love Paulette's big blue snake on Paradise Lost, add to that Eve looks like Betty Rubble and Adam has man boobs, perfect :-). It's just the most gorgeous piece.

Thanks for taking the time to read my rambling, memory filled post :-). I hope everyone is happy, healthy and getting lots of stitching time!

Oh it's gorgeous, Katrina!!! And all the A&E's are gorgeous! That snake story still gets to me. Eek! I'd have been scared stiff too! Your grandmother -- brave woman! Congratulations on finishing Sarah! I love her!

Beautiful job on Sarah! That plate is awesome...great companion piece for Sarah! Love the framing Jill did on your Earth Sampler.

I'm scared of snakes too...I may be more scared of spiders though. Too many bad experiences with spiders! Ack!

I think our childhood memories with our grandparents are always so very special even if sometimes not a fun memory. I have very fond memories of spending quality time with my grandmother. I am now trying to spend lots of time with my grandchildren when I am home in Canada and hopefully leave them with warm memories of their Gramma.
I love your snake stories and how you have turned it into a wonderful collection of stitching and other treasures.

Beautiful finish Katrina. And, love your story about the snake! Way too funny and enough to scare a child for life!! I'm glad you can safely stitch them though. Your work is lovely. Congratulations!

Hisssssssss...just kidding. You know I hate them, too. Reading this post tonight will probably make me dream of snakes. Your Sarah is wonderful and she'll be fabulous next to your new plate. Anytime you need me to be your personal shopper again, just let me know.
BTW, you've been a very good blogger lately :~

where can I find the S. Seifer chart? I googled for it and everything...is it in one of their books? Would you be interested in an Adam and Eve pattern trade? I love them too...I have a degree in religious studies, and took a class devoted to Adam and Eve - very interesting!!

Fantastic finish, Katrina! Woo hoo! :) I love the memories that stitching can stir up. Congrats on the plate, too--you'll have to take pics once you get your redware all set up and show us your display.

Beautiful finish Katrina!! That would have freaked me out too - I'm not a huge fan of snakes either. Although - I do remember playing with a small green one when I was younger. I don't know what I was thinking. You wouldn't catch me doing that now!! All of your stitching is so pretty. Can't wait to see pics of your new plates!! :)

Oh goodness Katrina - I would have had a heart attack is I came across a snake like that. Garter snakes I can deal with but not something like that!!! But you know, stitching snakes is a whole lot different than coming across a live one unexpectedly.

I love, love Sarah Seifer. It's such a great sampler, but I didn't realize how small it actually came out. And you know, after you snatched that plate up, I had to order one for myself. Won't be here for a while, but that's okay - it's a b'day present to myself. DH will get the bill then! LOL

Anyway, wonderful finish Katrina!!

Katrina, what an interesting story - I can't imagine how scary that was for you as a child. I think woman of yesterday are a whole lot tougher than us girls today.

I love Sarah - she is just beautiful! Of couse I love all things A&E. I just requested a painted A&E from Tanya and can't wait to see what she comes up with - she is so talented.

Love, love, love the plate and I'm with Deb - I gotta have one of those. Thanks for enabling all of us :-)

Enjoy your weeke, Katrina.

I shouldn't have read your snake story first thing in the morning...Ewwww. I can understand how a child could be traumatized... an adult could be traumatized too.
All of your A&Es are gorgeous as well as the Earth Sampler. Jill did a beautiful job on the mat and frame.
I'm so glad that you're posting more often now.

All so lovely! The Earth Day sampler is one of my favorites, and I can't wait to start the PSS piece. I love the blue snake and the man boobs in that one too! I'm on the weird end of the spectrum about snakes. They don't bother me at all, and I am actually a little fascinated by them. I had to catch a copperhead that got into the garage last week, and I put him in a tupperware container so I could look at him for awhile! Crazy, I know!

Hi Katrina!
Love your finish, you have great taste ;-)
I love your A&E plate!! I cannot find it on the website though...was it a special order?
Your framing from Jill is spectacular, love that she added the snake along the side of the mat like that!
Wonderful post full of eye candy!

Such a fun story of your childhood, minus the snake that is. Brrrr not for me! Your fascination with them is beyond my understanding LOL! I don't care for them, in real life nor in cross stitch. I did stitch Lisa's Earth Sampler but that is as far as I go with stitching snakes thank you very much ;-)
Love Sarah Seifer (minus the snake) and the colors are so beautiful! Congrats on another finish!

Just beautiful, Katrina! I think you've got a snake theme going on, even if they aren't your favorite.

Cute picture of you!

I loved your story/stories pertaining to your love/hate relationship. Funny and poignant at the same time!!

Your Granny's yard and swing looks just like my Granny's yard and swing :)

I love your Eldreth pottery plate (I bet we'll see those cropping up all over the place now!)

And your Sarah Seifer is gorgeous! I have her waiting in my wings too ;)
Paulette's sampler is darling but A & E remind me of Elvis and Pricilla :)

Sarah is gorgeous Katrina and the A&E plate is just perfect with it! I'm so glad we don't have snakes here. I'm not surprised you're freaked by them after that incident. Love the Jill Rensel framing, pefect for this piece.

Loved your snake story, Katrina--they scare me to death, too, but not as much as bats! I am just terrified of them...

All of pieces are gorgeous, but I have to say that your Earth Sampler finish and frame is the prettiest I've seen--wonderful job :)
