New Years Stitching Resolutions...

I am already thinking about the New Year and stitching resolutions. I have been in a a stitching slump the last several months. I love participating in exchanges, PIFs and making gifts for people but I feel like lately that's all I do. I really, really want to stitch on things for me. I hope that doesn't sound selfish, I want to concentrate on stitching for my own pleasure for a bit :-). One of the pieces I would very much like to finish in 2008 is Village of Hawks Run Hollow. So far I have one block done.

I am going to finish my last few PIFS, an exchange and a couple of ornaments for my stitching group and guild exchange this weekend. I am off work Thursday and Friday and my DH is traveling for work this weekend so that gives my four days of turbo stitching.

I hope to spend some time this month setting a few goals for next year and going through my stash, that always inspires me to get busy :-). Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving! Ours was great, food was good and I sent all the leftovers home with my DS and his roommate. I did a lot of online Christmas shopping so I just need to get odds and ends now :-).

BTW, I was trying to figure out why no one commented on my last post. I realized when I changed my settings around last month, I disabled the comments. I was trying to make things a bit more secure because I was getting some "junk" posts here and there. I think I've fixed it. I appreciate everyone who takes the time to read my blog and I love reading your comments.

Stitching for yourself is not selfish. We need to make ourselves happy or we are of no use to others. Get those needles going and make yourself something beautiful. I look forward to seeing what you stitch.

Take care,
Teresa

Your block looks so nice! I have done so many exchanges and round robins this year, I’m going to cut back a bit as well. I love doing them though, receiving is the best part! I am glad you had such a great holiday last week. We found out we aren’t going to Colorado this Christmas, but this summer instead, just thought you’d like to know :)

Katrina - it's not selfish at all! I know that in the past, I feel like I've overcommitted, and ended up just stitching because I felt obligated to do so!

This year, I signed up for your Neighbourhood RR, but that was it, no other exchanges. What felt good about it was that if I wanted to stitch something for someone else, I could do it because I wanted to, not because I was obligated to!

Having said that, I just recently signed up for 2 exchanges, but they are both due out in the middle of January. That might be it for the year for me!

It is about time for you to be a little self indulgent, sometimes givers need to recharge and why not! Enjoy your turbo stitching, get lots done. It is always nice to have some time to straighten out & organize your projects. Good luck.

Boy, I sure understand when you get overwhelmed. This year I did one RR, one SAL and one exchange. I find I then had more time to concentrate on other things and got a lot done. Hope you are able to work it out.

Like your other commentors, I've slowly pared down my outside stitching commitments as well. Dropping some of the charity groups was the hardest, but I have to admit that I do enjoy my stitching a lot more now and I think that comes through in the finished product as well. :)

I'm glad you re-configured your blog so we could comment again!!

I wanted to leave a comment, but couldn't! LOL Anyway, I don't think it all selfish about stitching for yourself....You will definitely get out of that slump once you do

Glad you fixed the comments - I tried to leave one too! I agree with you, I'm really wanting to spend some time stitching for myself now that Baby Garden is done (a gift). It's fun to stitch for others, but I think it's important to stitch for yourself too if that's what makes you happy. Your VOHRH is beautiful - I'd love to stitch that one too. Good luck with your new goals - I'm finding myself alredy looking towards next year too!

If I could make a button, I would suggest we make 2008 the Year of "Selfish" Stitching! Let's get someone on that!

Katrina, I'm glad you fixed your settings!

Lol - love Anna's comment. :D

Well, Katrina, you know exactly how I feel about 'selfish' stitching :o)
Love your first VoHRH block! So far, I've finished blocks 5 and 6...

I don't think it's selfish! I for one have not joined that many exchanges for that reason. I hope your stitching dreams will come true in 2008!

Going through stash always inspires me too, your block looks really good have fun with VOHRH. I am currently stitching on Mary Beales advent and though it is a monster of a project seeing Siobhans, Margarets and now Nancys finishes I'll keep at it. A good winter stitch and the NPI's are so nice to stitch with.
in friendship and stitches,
Dawn

Great job on block one I as well have the first one done but must get through the holidays before I can continue. You should always stitch for yourself, no one else thinks that your selfish!!

I've been in a bit of a stitching slump myself. Hope you get your groove back with it soon.

I don't think it's selfish to want to stitch some stuff for yourself. I realized a couple of years ago that I had stitched so much stuff for other people, but had nothing for myself. So, I try (note the word try) to stitch at least one thing for myself a year now.

I know someone that stitched Hawk Run Hollow. She tried to stitch a block a month. Once she finished with that block for the month she would pick up something else to stich on until the next month started. She said she felt like she killed two birds with one stone, so to speak.

Love your exchange pieces from last post! :-)

It's so easy to get overwhelmedm trying to find the right balance can be a real trick. I am still working on that myself. Setting aside time for your projects is not selfish.

annemarie also is on the selfish stitching 2008 campaigne & has a nice yellow button : )

I heard there is going to be another hawk run project in Nashville. Those are awesome projects.

Katrina, you're one of the least selfish people I know. I just counted up and I've finished 21 things this year (seems like it should be more), and only 8 of those things were gifts. I've signed up for an exchange in mid-January, but have no idea what I'll get up to giving away. I think you should stitch/do what makes you happy and not feel badly about any of it! Hurray for keeping what you make!

I don't think your being selfish at all Katrina! And I'm right with you on cutting down on exchanges, etc. Looks like you've got a good start on VHRH!

Looking forward to seeing this wip progress next year.

Your village block looks great.
I used to involve exchanges and so on. I have stopped in the last 2 years. I don't like deadlines and I love to stitch something for me. I still do birthday and christmas stitching for my friends. You may just need a break, that is all, not selfish.

Kathy said...

Stitching is all about doing for yourself. Don't worry about being selfish. I have been selfish and not signed up for any exchanges. I was afraid it would just take too much of my precious time.

Block 1 looks great. Keep working you will get it done. It is such a fun thing to stitch. I have 1 and 2 done and just before the 1st I started Block 3.

Katrina---I'm catching up on blog reading finally! I would not for one minute think that a goal of stitching for yourself would be selfish! Sometimes we get too wrapped up in exchanges, etc and they ARE fun, but very time consuming! SFS (Stitching For Self) is good! Go for it! ~Kim

I don't thinking stitching for yourself is selfish at all! Of course it's great that you share your talent with others and that you have people who appreciate you taking the time to stitch something for them, but really, you should do something for yourself, too.

Joanie said...

I agree with all the replies. 2008 is the year of Stitching for Self! It's great to share with like minded stitchers who appreciate the time and the love that goes into PIFs, SALs and exchanges but we need to do for ourselves too!

Carol said...

Great plan Katrina! You certainly have been a generous soul all year, and it will feel good to have some stitching to keep for yourself. Looking forward to seeing more of your VOHRH!

Lennu said...

Hi Katrina, Thank you again for the wonderful pillow! It's not selfish at all to stitch for yourself for a change! I'm looking forward to seeing everything you complete next year :)

I decided not to set too firm goals for the new year, just to take things light and not stress myself out with stuff. Still, it doesn't stop me having a list of stuff I wanna stitch!

You sound a bit like me in dumping work and staying home to enjoy life!!! Why work when we have husbands to do it for us, huh??

Your first block of VoHRH is looking wonderful! I've stitched the first three squares, but I started way back in the summer of last year! I need to stitch on it much more in 2008 too. :)

Merry Christmas!
